Striving to Live a Life of Adventure, Excellence, and Faith.

#1 Goal for 2018

In 2018, I have 10 major goals.  I know that is A LOT, but after a lot of thinking, praying, and planning I settled on 10 goals that if I can accomplish will really impact my life.

The first goal (and the most important one) is to Be intentional in growing closer to the Lord.

Over the past 15 years, my relationship the Lord has really grown and flourished; however, at the end of 2017 I felt like I was only going through the motions in my on again, off again quiet times with Jesus.   I couldn't find the words when I prayed, I didn't find the Bible engaging, and my spirit just felt FLAT.

As I began to pray about how to grow closer to the Lord, I remembered a verse (James 4:8) that says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you."  So, I know if I take time and begin really getting intentional about being closer to the Lord that He will draw closer to me.  I truly desire to walk closer with the Lord, to be led by the Holy Spirit, and to to love others like He loves us.

So, with my most important goal of 2018, Be intentional in growing closer to the Lord, I know I have to drill that down into smaller/mini-goals. Here are my three micro-goals to help me accomplish my overall goal.

Read the bible chronological order in 2018.
Last year, one of my favorite social influencers and small business mavens, Lara Casey took on this goal and I loved watching her faith flourish throughout the entire year.  She inspired me to take on this goal in 2018.  So, for the past eight days I have started my day with the Bible App's Chronological reading plan and I am already feeling so connected with the Lord through His Word.  I also took Lara's advice and put the audio speed at 1.5x to help the narration keep my attention.  It took a day or so to get used to, but now its the perfect speed.

Be disciplined in my morning quiet time.
Waking up a little earlier each day to spend time in the Word.  My 2018 quiet routine involves:
Then on the way to work I listen to worship music and pray for the day ahead.

Taking time to be intentional in starting my day with the Lord is already uplifting my soul so much, and I cannot wait to see the journey He takes me on this year.

Attend church every week.
Now this BIG mini-goal is going to be a little bit of a challenge, because Matt and I do not have a home church at this time.  And, throughout my life I have found myself in this same situation two time before, and each time the Lord has always richly blessed me with finding a church I can serve, be encouraged, and become friends with a lot of the members.

These seasons in life where I was looking for a new church took place when I came home from college and when I moved to Knoxville after we got married.  And, both times the Lord placed me in a place where I could grow, serve, and flourish.  Now that we are living back in our home town, I am praying we find a church that is closer to our home so we can be more involved and meet new friends. I know the Lord will place us in the right church, I just know He will, and the only way to make that happen is to actually get up, go to a church, and visit different churches.

Outside of my three micro goals, I also have a few mini-goals to help me grow closer to the Lord.
  • Create a worship playlist (I will add songs to this list throughout the year.)
  • Be intentional in taking a true Sabbath day (resting and reflecting one day a week)
  • Become more neighborly (get to know my neighbors)
  • Do 2 to 4 (depending on length) in-depth bible studies this year, studying different books of the bible.
  • Read 1 to 2 Faith Focused Books

I hope you enjoyed the breakdown of my number one goal for 2018.  I hope to share the other 9 goals and breakdowns on here throughout the year.

Have a blessed week,

Kim

In Every Season............

I truly believe that we go through different seasons in life.  Just like gardening, we have seasons of being planted, seasons of rest, seasons for growth, a season for pruning, and a season for harvesting.  Each one of these seasons brings new joys and challenges, and even though I prefer to go from being planted to flourishing overnight, I recognize the seasons of our lives really help us remain balanced.

The season I am in right now is a sweet one.  Life has its ups and downs, but all in all it is a low-key, precious time in life.  Matt and I have been married 10 years this summer, and with each passing day I love him more than I thought I ever could.  I praise the Lord for that, because as we know life can be hard, and often times we take it out on the person we love the most, yet, with God's grace He gave me the most patient, loving, giving, and amazing partner and I am beyond blessed.

My family is doing well.  We have been facing a little bump in the road with my mother-in-law's most recent hip replacement surgery, but once again I am amazed by our incredible close family, and everyone stepping up and in to help her any way we can.

My job is going great, and I am really excited about all the exciting things coming up in the next few months.  And, even though we (along with the rest of the community) are facing a few hurdles with local government, I am confident our organization will get through it and end up stronger in the end.

And, even in the sweet season, hurdles will still come in our way.  I am still praying for healing to my ankle/lower leg from a nasty fall I took in Nashville in March.  The swelling is still crazy, and my doctor and I cannot seem to find a way to make it decrease. Matt and I are always praying for wisdom in a few decisions we need to make in the coming months.  And, each week can offer a few speed bumps, but overall I am truly enjoying this season.

I absolutely love being back in my hometown, being able to connect with my family, my church family, and my close friends.  I like the pace of life right now, and I am so thankful for each day.  I find myself stopping throughout the day, and just thanking God for my life.  He has truly blessed me, and I am so excited to see what He has in store for me.

So in this sweet season of life, I want to remain joyful, content, and most of all thankful.  I know that to cultivate those things I must give of myself more, love bigger, and encourage and lift up those around me.

So here is to celebrating this sweet season in life, and praising the Lord through even the hard stuff, because in the end I will face many seasons in life, and each season I will praise the Lord.

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Having a plan when life feels too hectic

Source
If you have blogged for any length of time, you know that sometimes its just hard to decide what the next blog topic should be on.  That's where I've found myself this week, so I decided to look back at some of the blogs I drafted and never published.  And, I was excited to find the following post because it is so timely in my life right now.

My work life is getting more and more hectic these days with lots of projects all coming due at the same time.  Yet, I know I just have to focus, stay positive, keep moving forward, trust and rely on the Lord, and these next few weeks will FLY by.  I hope you enjoy this post and all these great reminders:

I came across this incredible “Manifesto” from Ann Voskamp’s Blog, and thought there is no better way to face a chaotic and overwhelming season in life than to face it head on. Below is a Sanity Manifesto, and to break it down into bit size amounts I thought it would be helpful to recap the top seven things that jumped out to me most.

1. First things first: Word in. Work out. Work plan.
Open your eyes every morning and just do these three things first:
1. Word in: Get into God’s Word and let it get into you.
2. Work out: Work out. Even  5 minutes of moving is better than nothing.
3. Work plan: Take time (the night before is preferable) to write out a "to-do" list for the day.  Next, just work the plan you have in place.

2. “What a heart knows by heart is what a heart knows”Its so important, as a Christian woman, to always be memorizing scripture.  The wisdom and guidance I have received in this simple practice has been life changing for me.

Write your memory verses on a spiral bound note card, a sticky note, your planner, anywhere where you will see it throughout the day.  "Because when you are memorizing Scripture, quiet time with the Lord — becomes all the time. (Who doesn’t want that?)"

3. Your work is art: it needs a soundtrack.
Music is so important to your day.  Be intentional to take time to select music to fill your office or home throughout the day.  My go-tos are Americana music, Praise and Worship Music, Classical music (if I have a lot of writing), and then a little bit of new-country.

4. Step on the Snake Before Breakfast
Look at that list you made last night or this morning for the day and quickly identify the biggest or most crucial task on your list.  (You know the one that will be a HUGE relief when you finish.)  Then TACKLE IT, and when you finish it (or finish an important portion of it) the release will be propel you into a great rest of the day.

5. Clean a space = clear head space
I live by this rule, and it helps improve my productivity 100%.  Keeping the work space clean, clears your head space to think.

6. Envision the End Goal
I work on EVERY major project from the ending to beginning.  I imagine the results I want to obtain and then work backwards, step by step, to ensure I set myself up for success. I then add each of those steps and tasks to my project management system, and finally just work the plan one small step at a time.

7. Rest so you can have the rest of God.
I am really preaching to myself here, but this one is important.  I love how the manifesto said - sleep is more than your friend — it’s your God-given fuel. Tomorrow always begins with the night before, so turn in early so tomorrow can turn out well

I am taking each of these to heart, and hope they encouraged you too.

Trust

Its Here! Its Here!  Today is one of my FAVORITE DAYS that only comes around every 4 years!  Its Inauguration Day, and I get so excited to see all of my favorite American traditions come to life once again.

For me, today is not about a person.  Today is about my country.  The country that I am very proud to be a citizen, and the country that I will respect with everything I do.

For me, as a Christian, its very important for me to respect and honor the authority that the Lord has put over my life. And in doing so, like I have for the past 18 years since I've been able to vote, I will not publicly or privately speak against the President of our country.

Why?  Because I believe God appoints all existing leaders.  I truly believe that no one can get into a place of legitimate authority without God's knowledge.  So, if I was to speak against the President, it is more than just stating my small opinion, its actually rebelling against the ordinance of the Lord, and it will only bring judgement on me.

I know this is getting into some really spiritual stuff, but every four years around election time, my belief on this subject grows a new resolve in my heart.  This principle is also one that I take into other areas in my life including my marriage (honoring my husband) and my work life (honoring my boss).  Because honoring the authority in my life, that the Lord has put before me, always brings blessings and peace.  However, when I resist the authority of God, whether directly or indirectly to His delegated authority, I find myself frustrated and stressed because I have come out of the Will of God.  I have learned this lesson the hard way, and I will always chose to stay in God's will than do anything that dishonors it.

Soooo.......... back to today.  Just as I did in 2000 after I voted for the first time, and again in 2004, 2008 and 2012, I will watch today's events with excitement and hope.  Hope that my President is successful, because if he is successful then we will be a successful country.

May God bless our country.

Siesta Scripture #12 of 24

I cannot believe we are half way through 2015's Scripture Memory Project. The days seem to fly by, and before I know it another 15 days have passed by.  This next verse is scripture that the Lord really placed on my heart recently in my quiet time.  Over the past few years, I have lost some friendships that have been very near to my heart.  I sometimes don't understand why the Lord decided to take them out of my life, but the void of not having them there often times makes me incredibly sad.  And, Apps like TimeHop, don't make things easier because when I least expect it, I see a photo from 2, 3, 4, 5+ years ago that reminds me of amazing times with those good friends. I trust that if those friendships are meant to be they will be, but until them, I will trust the Lord in the friendships He brings into my life.

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." (Phil 3:13 NIV)

Be blessed my friends!

When God Says Move.........

I've been a Christian since I was eight (maybe a little longer), and over the last 27 years the Lord has done some AMAZING things in my life and truly blessed me in ways I never deserved.  However, over the past year, the Lord has poured out a blessing that has been exceeding abundantly more than I could have asked or imagined. (Eph. 3:20).

When I think about life a year ago, I remember the following things:

- Being exhausted beyond words
- My body on the brink of a nervous breakdown
- Doubting all my abilities, judgements, and talents
- Feeling like I was failing as a wife, daughter, and friend
- Frustrated for letting my life get so far away from me
- And, finally deciding to make the decision to change everything I could in my life - including my job, walking away from so-called friends, and stepping down from EVERY community and civic responsibility.

I knew I had the love and support from my incredible husband and family, and by the grace of God I knew the ONLY thing that could ever help get me out of this pit was the Lord himself.  Everything about my situation aggravated me.  I felt used, mentally abused, and I knew this was not the life the Lord had intended me to live.

I can even remember back to an evening last January, when I received a very frustrating call about something at work, and when I got off the phone all I could do was cry.  I was so frustrated and tired, and I couldn't find any words to pray.  All I could do was cry, and I knew things needed to change.

So, I began asking the Lord to change my heart, change my situation, change my outlook on life, and ultimately change the direction of my life.  I knew I was being a sub-par wife, daughter, and friend, and all the effort to be a rock star employee had blown up in my face like a puff of wind.  I was done doing things "My Way," and decided it was time to begin trusting that the Lord to put me back together again - to be whole, complete, and ready to serve Him.

That incident in my kitchen stirred something in my soul, and I knew the only way I would get through it was to WAIT (patiently) on the Lord.  So, I soon changed jobs, and began getting balance in life.  I worked normal hours, spent lots of time with my husband, friends, and family and enjoyed some much needed relaxation.  I faced some health issues as my body recovered from the intense stress; however, by summer I was feeling great, and the Lord was blessing me with a season of rest that I had not experienced in a long time.

In the Fall, I began experiencing a stir in my heart that something was about to change.  I didn't know what it was, but spent a lot of time praying and talking to Matt and beginning to open our hearts to a possible upcoming transition.

Side note: For years, Matt and I talked about how we would NEVER move back home, because we could not find jobs in our hometown.  However, in 2014, the Lord began changing our hearts, and we kept talking about how much we desired to be closer to family and discussing the possibility to moving home.

As Fall was well underway, I learned about a new work opportunity in my hometown that sounded very interesting.  As I stated above, Matt and I had been talking more and more about moving home, and this opportunity seemed like the perfect fit.  The only kicker - Matt's job was still in Knoxville.  After going through one of the most intense interview processes of my life, I was so excited to land the new job.  And, it didn't take Matt or I very long to agree that this was definitely a path the Lord was leading us, and excitedly took the new job.

Starting my new job at the BCM!

We still were not sure when Matt would get a job or if we would have to co-habitat in two cities for a while.  However, in our hearts we had a peace that everything would work out perfectly.  And, God's timing was right on track.  By December, Matt learned of a new opportunity with his company and was awarded a promotion and a transfer to be closer to home. (Oh well for once believing we could not find jobs in our hometown......LOL!!)

Over Christmas, I spent time packing up our house and moving, and in January we put our house on the market.  Five (5) HOURS later, we sold it and this past Friday we finalized all the paperwork and closed on the house.

Every step of this process as been perfectly orchestrated by the Lord's timing. Even at our closing, a small gift was given to Matt and I that the Lord used to reaffirmed that He is into even the smallest details of our lives.

Which leads me back to the beginning of this post - yes, I have been a Christian for 27+ years; however, even today I am blown away about how loving and faithful Jesus truly is to those who place their trust in Him.  The Lord has it ALL under control and all we have to do is TRUST, be patient, and wait on His timing to move.

I am so honored that the Lord entrusted Matt and I with this big transition so we could give Him all the glory He deserves.  This transition to move closer to home has been such a blessing and a reassurance to my soul.  He has changed me from the person I was a year ago and my soul is better for it.

So, if you are facing challenges and feeling defeated about where life has you. STOP.  Turn over all those fears and worry to the Lord, and I promise the adventure that is ahead of you is exceedingly, abundantly more than you can think or ask.

Be blessed my friends!!

Scooter Man Davis Loves Jesus

I wrote a couple of weeks ago that I was getting back into the habit of getting up early each morning for bible study before starting the day.  What I failed to mention is that I am not alone.  As I get out of bed around 5:30 a.m. each morning, Scooter Man Davis is ready to go.  I've always teased that he LOVES Jesus about as much as I do, because every time I sit down for Bible Study he is right there with me.  He listens patiently as I work on memory verses, read the word, and pray.  However, I totally laughed out loud, when I opened my eyes from praying and saw him turned upside down with his eyes closed.  I tried to catch a pic, but he opened his eyes when I reached for my phone.  LOL!

I love that Scooter Man Davis loves Jesus, and I hope one day I have the honor to raising my own children to love the Lord with all their heart and lives.

Happy Tuesday!!

Siesta Scripture #3

Whew this weekend was crazy busy, but very productive and lots of fun!!  I headed to Knoxville this weekend, and between moving and seeing a lot of amazing friends, it was an awesome weekend.

More details on the move to come, but since its the 1st of the month, I wanted to share my scripture I am memorizing for the next 15 days.

1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain."

This weekend, I listened to the Passion conference in Houston.  I loved the reminder from Christine Caine, who said - "We are called to be a generation that is on mission for the Kingdom of God. We are called to do the work that God as set before us."   What an incredible reminder!

Siesta Scripture #2

Wow, these past 15 days have flown by and I cannot believe its time for Scripture #2!!

Over the past few days, the Lord has sweetly brought the following scripture into my quiet time.  Its the perfect prayer to memorize to begin each day by saying:

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. - Psalm 143:8 (NIV)

Now, I am going to memorize the NIV version; however, I simply love The Message Version too:

If you wake me each morning with the sound of your loving voice,
I’ll go to sleep each night trusting in you.
Point out the road I must travel;
I’m all ears, all eyes before you.

I love this prayer, because it begins with an expectation in our hope for the day ahead, as we affirm our trust in the Lord. The scripture reiterates our trust in God as we worship Him by lifting up our souls each morning.  What a perfect way to begin the day - looking to the Lord for what He has planned for us and praising Him for who He is.

Oh ladies, how I love the Siesta Scripture Memory Team.  Its still not too late to sign up, and if you are interested check out the Living Proof Ministries Blog.

Have a blessed Thursday!!!

Siesta Scripture #1

Oh friends, if you have been a part of Beth Moore's Siesta Scripture Memory Team in the past then you know the excitement that is my heart.  I have participated two times before, and its been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

The goal of SSMT is to memorize 24 scriptures in 2015 (two per month.) This year, there is a little extra incentive for me. At the end of 2015, I will qualify to attend an event in Houston to see Beth Moore live.  Now, I have seen Beth live many times before; however, the difference this year is that my very best friend is now living in Winnie, TX (which is not far from Houston!!)   So what's better Beth and my BFF, it doesn't get better than that.  LOL!!!

The first scripture is Isaiah 42:6 NIV

"I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles."

This verse really stirs my heart. The Lord calls each of His children to be righteous.  This does not mean perfection, but means to strive to be in right standing with God at all times.  To rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances. To be disciplined and self controlled, to always be good stewards of what we have, and to always strive for excellence in everything we do.

This verse also reassures us that The Lord is always leading us and will hold our hand to get us through each day.  When someone takes your hand, its a gesture of love, protectiveness, and faithfulness.

Finally, the verse promises us that the Lord will give us opportunities to be a light to this lost world. To be a source of help for those in need, and to love everyone.

Are you part of SSMT this year?  If so, I would love to "e-meet" you as we go on this adventure together.

Be Blessed My Friends and  Happy New Year!!

IPhone Dump.........

I can honestly say that over the past month, life has truly been amazing.  I've truly taken time to get lots of rest, enjoy the quietness of life for once and get back to the basics.

One of my sweet  friends gave me some wise advice back in February.  She encouraged me to take some time and hit the RESET button on my life, and get back to enjoying what was important to me.

For someone who had been soooo devoted to just one area of my life, her advice came at the perfect time. So hence the blog break; however, I wanted to take a moment and share some of the fun memories that took place in January and February.

Enjoy these sweet moments.

Whatever You Do, Do It All for the Glory of God

To say the Lord has led me over these past few months is actually an understatement.  My reliance on God has been the only thing that has sustained me in perfect peace over the last couple of months.  I have found myself  reading book after book this year, and purposefully so, all of them are focused on building our faith through times of transition and chaos.  I feel like I've read more books in the past two months than I did in 2013 and 2014 combined.  LOL.

Here are the books I read in January alone.....

These books have been incredible, and I just have to share some of my favorite things each of these jewels has taught me:

1. Dear Jesus

This sweet devotional is a sequel to my other favorite Sarah Young books called Jesus Calling.  This small book is divided into topics/themes.  I usually match it to an emotion or feeling I am having that day, or even match it to what I am studying in the Word that morning.  It gives a sweet prayer, followed by scripture and words of encouragement on particular topics.

2. Restless

Jennie Allen is becoming one of my FAVORITE Christian teachers.  Her heart and passion to minister to women is amazing.  I have to be honest and say that I haven't finished this book; however, so far this book is beginning to show me that God is using my life for His Glory.

Here is a short sneak peak about the book:

)

3. Balancing It All

Another one of my favorite authors, Candace Cameron Bure gives a look in her journey from childhood to motherhood to working woman. Her stories remind me that in our everyday lives how to rely on God with His guidance and leading.

4. Whispers of Hope

Starting the day with a Beth Moore Devotion - How can you go wrong with that?  This devotion has transformed my prayer life.  Each day Beth teaches on a particular topic or bible story, and then the devotion leaves room to write prayers listing 5 different areas to pray for:  Praise, Repentance, Acknowledgement, Prayers for Others, Prayers for Self, and Equipping.  What a beautful routine to get in the habit of praying.  Its the Lord's Prayer coming to life.

 5. Chasing God

This book captivated me the moment I saw it on the book shelf at Lifeway.  Angie does an incredible job teaching the reader through her vulnerabilities on what it means to rest and open your hear to God, and stop chasing Him.

Here is a sneak peak of Chasing God:

)

6. Living Beyond Your Feelings

Oh my, one of my favorite books ever. I needed this book in a certain season of my life, and I know God used it to help me face some major anxieties, hurts, and tests I had ever faced.  Through this study the Lord showed me how to access His Peace in hard times and how to truly trust Him, day in and day out.  I am usually not an emotional person, but over the last year, my emotions decided to play havoc in my normally calm life, and I let them.  Joyce teaches how to get control of our emotions and feelings, and stop giving into them when they are out of control.  I cannot tell you how much peace and simplicity that has established in my life since learning to recognize my feelings and how to respond to them.  If life has you beat down and worn out, this is a must read.  It will help strengthen you and give you calm in the midst of a crazy storm.

I hope you enjoyed these short reviews.  I have read several other books in February and March, and will share an update with you on those books soon.  If you are looking for a good devotion or a book a certain topic, these books are definitly worth reading.

Happy Wednesday.
